ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m interested in what happens when the subconscious and the rational mind get together and make something neither one could have planned. My process usually starts pretty loosely—with automatic marks, layers of color, and a lot of improvisation. I’m drawn to the kind of rhythm and tension that happens when things don’t quite go as expected.

Jazz, punk rock, skateboarding, and nature all find their way into the work in one form or another. I like the energy of improvisation, the freedom of making it up as you go, and the happy accidents that come from not trying to control everything. There’s also a strong pull toward nostalgia—the colors, textures, sounds, and feelings that somehow stick with us.

Somewhere in the mess, a theme usually starts to show itself. I follow it, push it around, cover it up, and see what comes back. The finished piece becomes a kind of snapshot of that process—a little world built from memory, instinct, chaos, and whatever happened to be on my mind that day.
